ADHD in Women - Masterclass
Understanding the Hormonal Impact on Women's Mental Health
This full-day masterclass explores the complex relationship between ADHD, female physiology and pharmacological treatment across the female lifespan. With a particular focus on prescribing and medication management, the course is designed primarily for clinicians involved in assessing, prescribing or monitoring treatment for ADHD and related mental health conditions in women. It is also suitable for therapists and other professionals who wish to develop a deeper understanding of how hormones, medication and women's health interact in clinical practice.
Women with ADHD often experience significant fluctuations in symptoms across different stages of life. Changes in oestrogen and other sex hormones can influence attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, cognition and overall wellbeing, while also affecting how individuals respond to ADHD medication and other psychotropic treatments.

This masterclass examines these interactions from puberty through to post-menopause, providing a practical and evidence-based framework for understanding how hormonal transitions can influence both ADHD presentation and treatment outcomes.
While menopause and perimenopause form an important part of the programme, the course takes a lifespan approach, exploring key stages including: puberty and menarche, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, menopause and post-menopausal health.
The day combines evidence-based teaching with real-world clinical expertise, covering:
-
How ADHD presents differently in women and girls, including masking, late diagnosis and gender-related diagnostic bias
-
The role of oestrogen and other hormones in brain function, neuroplasticity and mental health
-
The impact of hormonal changes on ADHD symptoms and treatment response
-
Contemporary prescribing approaches for women with ADHD across different hormonal stages
-
ADHD medication considerations during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause
-
Best-practice menopause management, including the role of HRT and its implications for ADHD treatment
-
Common prescribing challenges and medication optimisation strategies in women with ADHD
-
ADHD in pregnancy and breastfeeding from a perinatal psychiatry perspective
-
Emerging areas including AuDHD, common co-occurring medical conditions and the role of psychological and lifestyle interventions alongside medication
A key feature of the masterclass is the inclusion of interactive breakout sessions, providing participants with the opportunity to engage directly with expert faculty in small-group discussions. These sessions are designed to support reflective learning and allow clinicians to explore real-life prescribing dilemmas, treatment challenges and complex cases from their own practice within a supportive, expert-led environment.
The programme concludes with a panel discussion exploring how clinical services can evolve to better support women with ADHD throughout different stages of life.
